Jersey City Coffee Shop Guide: Four Spots Worth the Walk

You can tell a lot about a block by its coffee shop.
Who’s there at 7am. Who’s still there at noon. Whether anyone behind the counter knows your order.
Jersey City has no shortage of places to get a latte. These four have a point of view: a two-story row house, a West Side mom-and-pop, a brand-new tearoom and a Heights bakery that’s been at it since 1998.
Snapdragon Coffee & Social
190 Monticello Avenue
A living room with an espresso machine.
Red brick row house. Two floors. Big wood tables, mismatched chairs, couches upstairs and a lot of windows. Nobody is rushing you out.
Hollywood noticed, too. Snapdragon was a filming location for A Complete Unknown, the Bob Dylan biopic. It opened in 2018 on a stretch of Monticello that’s been quietly coming into its own ever since.
Treehouse Coffee Shop
34A West Side Avenue + 205 Brunswick Street
Roasted here. Poured here.
Diana and Frank, local parents, opened Treehouse on West Side Avenue in 2019. They roast their own beans, and the outdoor seating earns its keep well into fall.
There’s a second location on Brunswick Street for the downtown side of town.
Jane’s Matcha
93 Franklin Street, The Heights
The Heights’ newest slow morning.
Jane’s Matcha started as a farmers market pop-up in 2024. This summer it became a real tearoom on Franklin Street, from founder (and Heights neighbor) Jane Yang.
It’s built around ritual, not speed. Order the Honeycomb Latte. And plan around Tuesdays, when it’s closed.
Angel Azul Bakery
60 Central Avenue, The Heights
If you know, you know.
Since 1998, the Gallo family has been pouring Colombian coffee on Central Avenue. The bakery case runs deep and the morning line says everything.
Guava-filled bread. Cassava bread. Get both.
Start With a Cup
Four shops, four very different personalities, mostly a few minutes from each other. Coffee is a pretty honest way to get to know a neighborhood.
If you’re trying to figure out which pocket of Jersey City fits you, start with a cup. Then call me.
